Cognitive Mechanisms That Underlie Reference Price Effects

چکیده

SESSION OVERVIEW tt is widely accepted that price evaluations involve some form of comparisons. That is, when faced with a stimulus price, the consumer evaluates that price by comparing it with some form of comparison standard. This comparison standard is often referred to "reference price." Two basic forms of comparison standards have been proposed in the pricing literature: Internal reference price (IRP) and External reference price (ERP). When consumers evaluate a stimulus price by comparing it with an internal, memory based price standard, they are said to use an internal reference price. But when the comparison standard is a price observed in the shopping environment (e.g., advertised price or the regular price), then consumers are said to use an external reference price. Though scanner panel data based choice models and experiments have established beyond doubt that price evaluation often, if not always, entail a reference price, the underlying cognitive process is far from clear. The three papers presented in this session seek to delineate the cognitive processes that underlie reference price effects.

Strategic pricing with reference effects in a competitive supply chain

The reference-price effect refers to the demand deviation caused by consumers’ perceived losses or gains when the current market price of a product differs from a cognitive benchmark (known as a reference price) formed by the customers based on past prices. The impact of such a reference effect on the dynamic pricing policy of a monopolist has been widely studied in the literature. However, des...

The Effects of Reference Prices on Bidding Behavior in Interactive Pricing Mechanisms

We examine the effect of reference prices on consumer bidding behavior in interactive pricing mechanisms used in online retailing, e.g., auctions and name-your-own-price. We find significant influences of different reference price concepts on bid values. However, after controlling for internal and external reference prices, sellers only have a moderate ability to affect bid values via the provi...

Assessing the emergence and reliability of cognitive decline over the life span in Fisher 344 rats using the spatial water maze

The spatial water maze is routinely used to investigate hippocampal-dependent spatial memory and the biological mechanisms that underlie variability in cognitive decline during aging. The utility of the task for repeated testing in order to examine the trajectory of cognitive decline and to prescreen animals prior to therapeutic interventions maybe limited due to carryover effects of repeated t...

Commentary: New View on Treatment of Drug Dependence

In the 1960s, discovery of pleasure system (defined as reward system) in the brain that may underlie drug reward and addiction encouraged many scientists to investigate the mechanisms by which drug abuse affects central nervous system function. In this regard, investigators developed several drugs targeting the brain reward system for drug dependence therapy. However, no positive results obtain...

Repetition accelerates neural dynamics: In defense of facilitation models.

Abstract Gotts, Chow and Martin give an excellent contemporary summary of the neural mechanisms that have been proposed to underlie the effects of stimulus repetition on brain and behavior. Here I comment on their Facilitation mechanism, and provide EEG evidence that repetition can accelerate neural processing.
